Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: There are many great reasons for joining the Turkey Trot:
  • All proceeds go to the Principal's Checkbook, which helps local kids with costs directly related to attending school.
  • It's a perfect occasion for gathering family and friends.
  • Walking or running is always a healthy thing to do.
  • It burns extra calories before the coming Thanksgiving Day feast.
  • The Turkey Trot is a terrific way for you to participate in helping people in need.

Q: Why have the charity element?
A: It's Thanksgiving Day and this event is a way of expressing thanks by helping those who are truly in need. Life ought to be bigger than ourselves. Much bigger. By helping people when we ourselves are in hard times, it really displays the heart we have for humanity overall.

Q: Can I race for free?
A: Absolutely. Donations are optional, though encouraged. If you donate at least $10, you'll receive an official Turkey Trot T-shirt (while supplies last)!

Q: Can I register on the day of the race?
A: Yes, but get there early, before 8:00am. (We will likely be out of T-shirts by then!)

Q: Can I donate $50 and get 5 T-shirts?
A: No. Sorry. One per each donation over $10. (The supply of shirts is limited.) But all the money above and beyond will be greatly appreciated by Principal's Checkbook!

Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: Beyond the value of what you receive, yes! The New Heights Foundation which handles the receipt of the money to the Principal's Checkbook programs is a 501(c)(3) organization.

Q: How far is a 5K or 10K?
A: 5K is 3.1 miles, 10K is 6.2 miles.

Q: Is the course well marked?
A: Yes, the course is clearly marked.

Q: Can my whole family run?
A: Yes. Entire families are very welcome. Even if you have a tiny tot, strollers are permitted (just be careful)!

Q: What if my kid wants to run but he/she can't make a whole 5K.
A: That's fine. Go as far as you want.

Q: Can I bring a dog?
A: Yes, but you must keep your dog(s) on a leash and clean up after them.

Q: How should I dress for the race?
A: Dress for running or walking, for both warmth and comfort. Wear the right shoes.

Q: Do I have to do the polar bear swim after the race?
A: The post race dip in Klineline Pond is totally optional, but fun to watch!

Q: Why are you having a piñata?
A: Because kids love candy! And so do we!

Q: Is food provided?
A: Yes, we'll have bananas, bagels, and even some donuts!
